Having failed to block the confirmation of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General, Democrats and their outside allies are now turning on Trump’s Labor nominee Andrew Puzder. The Hill reports that a letter signed by more than 100 labor groups calls on Trump to withdraw the nomination:

The letter was signed by 128 left-leaning organizations, including the AFL-CIO, Service Employees International Union, Communications Workers of America, United Steelworkers, Fight for $15, Good Jobs Nation, National Employment Law Project, Jobs With Justice, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

“The undersigned call on the Trump administration to withdraw the nomination of Mr. Puzder at once, and find a suitable nominee who shows proper respect for working people and our nation’s employment laws,” the letter reads.

Many of the complaints appear to be the same ones AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka offered in a letter last month. The one new element is Puzder’s admission Tuesday that he once employed a housekeeper who was an illegal immigrant. Puzder has said he didn’t know the woman’s status at the time and fired her when he found out.

Today, Senator Chuck Schumer also called on Trump to withdraw Puzder’s nomination. The Hill reports Schumer said, “They ought to withdraw Puzder’s nomination before he further embarrasses this administration and further exposes the hypocrisy of President Trump saying one thing to the American people and doing another.” The “hypocrisy” is an apparent reference to Puzder’s housekeeper issue.

The downside to the Democrat’s going all in on obstructionism against Trump’s remaining nominees is that there is no motivation for Republicans to change course. Dropping Puzder would be seen as a win for Democrats and would renew their energy to fight remaining nominees, including whoever was nominated in place of Puzder. The GOP is better off pushing through and ensuring the Democrats’ efforts, and those of unions who work against the GOP every election, end in failure.

Puzder’s confirmation hearing has been rescheduled for next Thursday. The LA Times notes this is the 5th time it has been moved because of delays getting paperwork from the Office of Government Ethics.
