“The View” co-host Joy Behar added to the debate over the ruling against President Trump on sanctuary cities by comparing illegal aliens to slaves seeking the “underground railroad,” Jews hidden from Nazis during the Holocaust, and then insulted first lady Melania Trump.
Behar made the comments during their show Wednesday in response to a defense of sanctuary city polices by Whoopi Goldberg.
“I do believe that people when the laws are in place,” Goldberg said, “when there’s a criminal, there’s nothing saying that New York can’t take care of that, that they’re not gonna deport somebody and say, ‘we put this person out.’ As I said the other day, Obama deported more illegal immigrants than any president, than any president. Or, undocumented immigrants, the words are like being black, or negro, or African-American.”
“It’s sort of like the Underground Railroad in a way,” Behar responded, “it reminds me of, or the people of Germany who took in the Jews, there are people who are really in trouble, who are going to be separated from their children.”
“And anyway, where’s Melania gonna go if we don’t have any sanctuary cities?” she offered, to great applause and laughter from the audience.
Behar appeared to recast first lady Melania Trump as an illegal immigrant who would seek safety from federal authorities in a sanctuary city. The first lady has maintained that she legally immigrated to the United States from her native Slovenia, although some detractors cast doubt on her claim based on a timeline of her modeling work.
The hosts were discussing the merits of sanctuary city policies in the wake of a federal judge blocking temporarily the implementation of President Trump’s executive order to defund sanctuary cities. Trump has said he’s looking into breaking up the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in response, though the ruling was made outside of that court.
Melania has been a favorite target for ridicule from the left, from the insults by a New York Times journalist to gay activist Dan Savage saying he ‘f**king’ hates the first lady, and rapper Bow Wow making an obscenely threatening insult at her. She got the last laugh from a false story in the Daily Mail however – she just recently won a reportedly million dollar settlement from the news outlet.
