Actor Johnny Depp apparently thought it would be entertaining to joke about assassinating President Donald Trump during a Thursday appearance at Glastonbury, a U.K.-based performing arts festival.

While introducing a screening of his 2004 film, “The Libertine,” Depp went off on a tangent and began discussing Trump with the audience.

“Can we bring Trump here?” he asked. As the crowd cheered — and jeered — he continued and said, “No, no, no; you’ve misunderstood completely.”

About the president, Depp added, “I think he needs help and there are a lot of wonderful dark, dark places he could go,” Depp told the crowd.

As the crowd both cheered and jeered, he defended himself and responded, “It is just a question – I’m not insinuating anything. By the way, this is going to be in the press. It will be horrible. I like that you are all a part of it.”

“When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” he asked, seeming to reference the assassination of Abraham Lincoln by actor John Wilkes Booth. “Now, I want to clarify, I am not an actor. I lie for a living. However, it has been a while and maybe it is time.”

Reactions on social media were mixed, but many found Depp’s remarks to be extremely distasteful, especially in the wake of the recent GOP congressional baseball practice shooting which hospitalized Sen. Steve Scalise (R-LA).

See some of the reactions below, as well as a segment of Depp’s remarks.
